The Battle of the Big Blue consisted of two separate battles fighting for control of Byram's Ford on the Big Blue River. On Saturday, October 22, 1864, Federal cavalry from the Department of Kansas and Kansas State Militia were defending the Byram's Ford crossing over the Big Blue River. Confederate cavalry under the command of Brig. Gen. Jo Shelby attacked to gain control of the ford so the large Confederate wagon train could cross the Big Blue River. On Sunday, October 23, the Confederates were deployed on the west side to prevent Federal cavalry from the Department of the Missouri from crossing the river. This book contains a walking tour of sites tied to the key events during the fierce contest that took place at Byram's Ford on the Big Blue River. The complete walking tour covers about 4.5 miles, and there are a few stretches of walking up or down some pretty steep hills. You should be able to complete the tour in a single morning or afternoon.
